João Oliveira dos Santos é honorário do Conselho da ABCA. Nasceu em 1933. Na academia de Pastinha recebeu os nomes Gavião e João Grande. Foi com ele em 1966 para o I Festival de Arte Negra de Dakar; participou do grupo folclórico Viva Bahia, viajando pelo mundo. Em 1981 é convidado com Lua de Bobó e Nô, pelo sociólogo Ken Dossar, para o Festival de Arte Negra de Atlanta. De lá vai ao encontro de Negro Gato, para fazer oficina em Nova York. Em Manhattan vive até hoje criando a Internacional Capoeira Angola Center.

 

Mestre João Grande ganhou em 2003 o doutor honoris causa pela Universidade de Upsala. Em 2005 a mais importante homenagem do governo americano, recebendo o National Heritage Fellowship Award. Waldeloir Rego escreveu sobre ele em 1969: “É dentre todos os grandes capoeiristas jovens o que mais truques de ataque e de defesa conhece, contribuindo para isso a flexibilidade de seu corpo, o mais ágil de todos os capoeiras da Bahia.
